Mood Boards, Mood Boards, Mood Boards

Ahhhh, mood boards….they’re not just inspirational to look at and fun to create, they’re so much more!

Mood boards are incredibly useful tools, especially when you’re working with businesses or brides-to-be. Mood boards not only give me as the designer a visual point of reference, but they also help ensure that I’m on the same page as my clients.

A wedding mood board gives the bride-to-be confidence that we’re on the same page regarding the style and look of the wedding invitation suite I’ll be creating. A business mood board is a great starting point if I’m designing a logo or new branding.

Even if you’re not a designer, creating a mood board can be a great way to discover what it is you like and don’t like, what inspires you and doesn’t, and the feel you want for your finished product. Whether you’re planning a wedding, branding your company, or designing the interior of your home, a mood board can be useful and inspiring, and a good point of reference.

How to Create a Mood Board

1. Gather Your Images

Gather images that inspire you or that you love. One of the best ways to do this is to browse Pinterest. You can search for certain colors, patterns, fonts, logos, etc. You may not have an exact idea in mind when you start searching, but as you search you’ll start to see things that you love. You can also create a secret board and pin these images to it.

2. Place Imagines into Design Software

Place the images you select into Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, or other design software. Move and scale the images to create a mood board layout that’s neat and organized.

3. Choose Your Color Palette

As you make your mood board, you’ll probably notice color schemes you’re drawn to and a common thread will start to emerge. Choose 3 to 6 colors that stand out to you from the images you’ve selected and add these color swatches to your mood board.

4. Refer to It As Needed

You can share this, save it, or keep it in an easy-to-see place for visual inspiration.
