Holiday Cards Vs New Years Cards: What’s the Difference and Which One Should You Send?

Christmas is around the corner, which means it’s time to select your favorite picture and order holiday cards. EEK! I absolutely love this time of year and seeing all of the beautiful holiday greeting cards.

One thing that many people don’t know about holiday cards is that there is a difference between holiday cards and New Year’s cards (and one has gained popularity over the years).

So, what’s the difference? And which one should you send and why?

Why You Might Order Holiday Christmas Cards

Well, first of all, holiday cards are more traditional.

They often wish a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or more general “Seasons Greetings.” Many holiday cards will also wish recipients a happy new year, but these in themselves aren’t what we’d consider New Year’s greeting cards.

Personalized Christmas cards are typically sent by individuals or businesses who celebrate the traditional holiday season and whose recipients also recognize or celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah.

Why You Might Order New Year’s Greeting Cards

New Year’s greeting cards very specifically wish recipients a happy new year. Many businesses opt to send out New Year’s cards, because they’re inclusive of all clients—those who celebrate the traditional holiday season and those who don’t.

It’s also a great option for individuals who aren’t particularly religious or who have a very mixed background of friends and family who celebrate different holidays or don’t celebrate at all.

New Year’s cards have gained popularity over the years, for a number of years. For one, they’re something different. They’re also often sent out after the first of the year making the already chaotic December...not so chaotic.

You can send New Year’s cards out up to 2-3 weeks into January and they still pass the etiquette test for being on time.

These can also have an inspirational or extended message that carries well into the year and stays relevant beyond the holidays.

What’s a Person or Business to Do?

When it comes to sending out personalized Christmas cards or New Year’s Cards, you should opt for the one that fits you, your family, or business best. Think through your vision, values, and the kind of message you want to send.

Also, consider your circumstances. If you’re running especially behind this year, you might save yourself way less stress to opt for a New Year’s card and give yourself some extra time.
